Yo LoMo!

Do you know where South Philly is?

When people find out I live in South Philadelphia, they say, “Oh, like near the Italian Market?” or even more to my amusement, “yeah, I used to live right off of South Street myself.” If you don’t know already, South Philly’s northernmost border is considered Washington Avenue. In recent years, there has been a real estate boom in Pennsport, Italian Market, and most recently Passyunk Square. Most center city folks rarely even make it to Snyder Avenue, but South Philadelphia goes a lot deeper than that.

I like to describe my location this way- when the Phillies hit a home run, I can hear the fans cheering from my front porch. I live in an area that I just found out is being identified as “Lower Moyamensing” as there has recently been founded a new local civic association by the same name. The borders are Snyder Ave to the north, Oregon Ave to the south, 8th Street to the East and Broad to the West.

Although home prices have risen significantly in the last 5-7 years, homes are still affordable to most first time home buyers, and by that I mean you can find a great 3 bedroom house in need of some minor cosmetic work for well under $200K. There have been a lot newcomers in recent years, yet there is still the charm of neighbors who were born and raised just down the street from where they live and have raised their own children. There is a lot of pride in the neighborhood, but unfortunately it sometimes feels like there is a divide between old and new residents, not to mention a feeling of being deserted by city hall. Yes, it’s great to park for free with no permit needed, but there is no street cleaning, no trash cans, no neighborhood watch, no general sense of community…or there hasn’t been until now.

The Lower Moyamensing Civic Association has taken the bull by the horns and in rapidly growing in number and actively pursuing tons of ideas to better the area. The new town-watch was just certified and is hitting the streets this week. The beautification committee has completed 2 street cleanups in the last year starting on 8th and 9th streets and planning their 3rd on 10th street for the month of april, and a great program that was just suggested- an N2N (Neighbor to Neighbor) organization that would come together to welcome new residents, bring food and support to families that have suffered a loss, or assistance to elderly or ill neighbors who live alone.
