Philly’s Citywide Cleanup - Ode to Michael Nutter!
April 16, 2008 by CITYSPACE
On Saturday, April 5, 2008 Philadelphia put itself on the map for a new kind of notoriety. In the past we have been tagged the ugliest city, the fattest city, the most dangerous city, the dirtiest city, but now we can boast that we are the home of the largest single-day, citywide cleanup in the country. Thank you Mayor Michael Nutter!
I have always felt the need to put myself on the defensive side when conversations about Philadelphia arise between me and foreigners (people not from Philadelphia). I love our great city, but it has felt lately that the number of people who shared my love and devotion has dwindled. Nutter is, as I have said in so many ways since his inauguration, a man after my own heart. He obviously shares this love and devotion and has earned a position of influence to actually do something about it. I hope one day to shake his hand and say my thanks in person.
On Saturday, our goals were lofty for a first time effort- in one day we endeavored to clean up 50 commercial corridors, 10 rec centers with the help of at least 10,000 volunteers. 15,000 people came out and cleaned 71 commercial corridors, 18 rec centers, and removed 2.56 million pounds of trash! Thanks to all who came out. You are restoring my faith- we can turn this reputation around- and we can live in beauty instead of squalor!
Mayor Nutter- if you need an extra volunteer to start arranging the next citywide cleanup- give me a ring!
