Swim, Run, Bike Philly!

So I have done it. I have signed up for a Triathalon - a women’s sprint triathalon called SheRox - which will take place on August 3, 2008 on the shores of the beautiful Schulykill River in our city of fabulousness - Philadelphia. I put it off for years, really I did - just being content with my 20 minute workouts, running on the trails of the Wissahickon, playing rec soccer on the weekends.
But last year I had some friends who did the SheRox, and it was truly inspiring and amazing to watch. There were women of all ages and sizes… running and biking both slow and fast. I think I cheered for everyone, I got really, really excited about it. People may have been afraid of me because I did so much yelling, encouraging and made lots of excited jumping up and down…
So anyway — I was determined… but then months passed and I started thinking about being eaten by the River Beast that lives in the Schulykill, and my desire to do SheRox waned - for fear of my life really. I mean that wouldn’t be the best way to go… I can see the headlines: “Woman eaten by River Beast! Identified by teeth and triathalon chip!” Ugh. Not how I imagine my demise…
But this is the thing people. I signed up anyway - crazy? Sure. But watching that event last year, I realized that somewhere along the way I started to be more fearful of the River Beast than I was excited about wearing all of that spandex in public. That’s when I realized that the River Beast isn’t even going to be able to catch me I’ll be swimming so fast - I have a seriously mean lookin’ sidestroke.
There is still room to sign up to participate, and SheRox is also looking for volunteers on race day if you feel like being involved while avoided the River Beast. Philadelphia is becoming quite the place to compete in athletic events - cycling and running events abound, including the Manayunk Bike Race, the Philadelphia Marathon, the Philadelphia Distance Run and one of my personal favorites, Bike Philly. Check it out! .
