Jeans and a tee (holes saluted) is the official garb of Philadelphia’s First Friday attendants. Every first Friday of the month, more than 40 art galleries throughout the city open their doors to the public (cover charge-free) to give a chance for unsung artists to flaunt their finest and to gather together art enthusiasts of every cast. And it just so happens that the highest concentration of participating art galleries lies in Old City, Philadelphia. Back in 1991, the Old City Arts Association launched the first First Friday a as a tacit acknowledgment of the wide gamut of art appreciators residing in and around the city; also as a way to bolster the economy generated from the purchasing of artwork produced by local Philadelphians. In Old city, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Streets are lined with street artists and filled with the approving chatter from the surrounding galleries. Free wine and cheese is usually available, provided free for a little extra incentive. (Goes good with art, and not a bad perk if I do say so myself). So if you live in the city, or are thinking about moving here, be sure to check out First Friday. And to get you started, below you’ll find a short list of participating galleries in the Old City area. Enjoy!
