The SOSNA Board annually seeks 5 new members.

Elections will take place on OCTOBER 14, 2009!

Current Initiatives of the SOSNA Board

ZONING: SOSNA holds monthly zoning meetings about new construction in the area, providing the only local opportunity for neighbors to raise suggestions and concerns about nearby building projects directly to developers and designers.

CLEANING: SOSNA organizes many neighborhood clean-up days throughout the year with the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee, and in conjunction with your PMBC Block Captains.

RECYCLING:  In partnership with Councilman At-Large Bill Green’s office, SOSNA has distributed over 500 blue recycling bins to neighbors this year – helping the environment and saving neighbors from getting fined.

GREENING: Over the years, SOSNA has organized the planting of hundreds of new trees in the neighborhood, and assisted neighbors’ efforts to create new public open space.

SAFETY: SOSNA has a close working relationship with the 17th Police District and the South of South Townwatch, most recently helping to organize a Nuisance Court for our area.

WALKABILITY: This year SOSNA was awarded a nationally competitive grant to help improve pedestrian safety neighborhood-wide, specifically around our three elementary schools.

Old City: City Tavern Sups Colonial-Oldies Style

Hold the Modernity, Please.

Restaurant Review by Aaron Stella

City Tavern's Sign

Quoth hey and a hearty good welcome and all that dribble straight from City Tavern, Old City’s blast-from-the-past restaurant/bar that serves up victuals in the dress and charms of our 18th century ancestry. Be prepared to play along once setting foot on the premises: every staff member is decked out in colonial garb (bonnets, knickers, goffered frills, petticoats, stockings, you get the picture) from the host to the barmaid to the servers. After the enthusiastic re-enactors, it’s the pub fare and cold ales that keep tourists and even all-too-familiar Philadelphians coming back. Here’s a little factoid: up until the early 19th century, people across America and Europe drank more beer than they did water since water was often suspected to contain contaminates whereas the alcohol in beer acted as a de facto sanitizing agent. And so, beer brewing was taken very seriously (up until Prohibition, that is. boo) if nothing but for the sake of quality. Such is City Tavern’s inspiration for the selection of beer they offer. Also, be sure to try to the apple cider. Now on to the food. Eating Antique-Americana cuisine is like eating a Thanksgiving feast. Here are a few mouth-watering faves that kept our colonialist brethren fat and happy: crab cakes “Chesapeake Style”, mallard duck sausage, giant cornmeal fried oysters, black forest ham and asparagus, pork chop “apple-wood smoked”, medallions of venison and lobster tavern pie. Whew! Desserts are created daily (pecan biscuits is one of their specialties, also Thomas Jefferson’s favorite). City Tavern is more than a restaurant/bar in Old City; it’s a treasured spot of Philadelphia’s historical acclaim. Be sure to stop in!

Flowers at Their Purest

Business Overview by Aaron Stella

Beautiful Flowers from Pure DesignIt’s florists like Pure Design that remind us of the glory of fields. Not to get to all literary on ya, but if you had your office space garlanded weekly in mother’s nature’s finest, you’d perhaps get a lump in your throat, or swell with feelings of sublimity. Located on 22nd and Lombard Streets in the Fitler Square Area, Pure Design is extolled citywide as being one of the finest, most accommodating and affordable florist’s in Philadelphia. Any search online for reviews will result in multiple accounts of from the Philly community, each testifying to the quality of the shop’s arrangements and friendly service. We here at CITYSPACE enjoy Pure Design as our resident designers. Pop into our office at 2200 Walnut near Rittenhouse Square if you don’t take my word for it. We have our interior floral arrangements changed weekly; each arrangement is as stunning as the next. Pure Design also supplies an assortment of decorative items in their shop, which, by the way, is also a work of art in itself. Wedding and other various catering services are also available through them. Be sure to stop in and see what they’ve got.

Ye Olde Trumbauer Building–Our Heavenly Office Place

We Can’t Keep it All to Ourselves. Come and Stay Awhile.

General Post by Aaron Stella

Beautiful Flowers in a Beautiful office.

CITYSPACE: re-thinking real estate. This time around, folks, we’d liked to give a little love to our beautiful office building–our home in many respects–in which we’re grateful to conduct business. Located on 22nd and Walnut Streets, we inhabit the old Horace Trumbauer building, which Trumbauer, internationally-renown architect (18681938) of the gilded age, designed for his son. Trumbauer’s firm’s more famous projects–with which you’re probably familiar–include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia City Hall, and the Philadelphia Free Library.  So, as you can imagine, a residence designed by Trumbauer must possess the same caliber of artistry for which all the aforesaid structures are revered. And much to our delight, it does in spades; and being that it is a historic building, we at CITYSPACE consider this gem of history to be just as much the community’s as it is ours. So please, if ever you find yourself curious about housing (buying, selling, or renting) in Philadelphia, stop into to our office, and take a brief respite. Free coffee and tea service for any visitors. We can’t keep this place all to ourselves, so come in and soak in the serenity of one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful flats around.

Old City: First Friday Celebration

The Informality of the Philadelphia Art World

Neighborhood Finds Post by Aaron Stella

First Friday revelersJeans and a tee (holes saluted) is the official garb of Philadelphia’s First Friday attendants. Every first Friday of the month, more than 40 art galleries throughout the city open their doors to the public (cover charge-free) to give a chance for unsung artists to flaunt their finest and to gather together art enthusiasts of every cast. And it just so happens that the highest concentration of participating art galleries lies in Old City, Philadelphia. Back in 1991, the Old City Arts Association launched the first First Friday a as a tacit acknowledgment of the wide gamut of art appreciators residing in and around the city; also as a way to bolster the economy generated from the purchasing of artwork produced by local Philadelphians. In Old city, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Streets are lined with street artists and filled with the approving chatter from the surrounding galleries. Free wine and cheese is usually available, provided free for a little extra incentive. (Goes good with art, and not a bad perk if I do say so myself). So if you live in the city, or are thinking about moving here, be sure to check out First Friday. And to get you started, below you’ll find a short list of participating galleries in the Old City area. Enjoy!
