LEED = Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The following informational slideshow is taken from "LEED For Homes" at USBGC.ORG
Green Homes help reduce the environmental impact of the residential construction industry. Green homes in Philadelphia will help make Philly and its housing stock healthier, easier to live in, and more energy efficient. In order for a Philly home to be green it doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. Lower utility costs associated with sustainable design often offsets additional costs incurred when building green. USGBC has established Leadership and Environmental Design that include LEED for New Construction LEED for Existing Buildings, LEED for commercial Interiors, and LEED for Core and Shell. LEED for Homes aims to help establish a national standard for sustainable design, operations, and home construction. The LEED for Homes rating system is based on 8 categories that measure the home's overall performance as an eco-friendly dwelling. Design, Location, Sustainable Use of Site, Water Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, Minimization of Materials and Resources Used, improvement of Energy Efficiency and the education of the homeowner/tenant are all criteria that go into establishing the LEED for Homes rating system. LEED for homes is based on points required to achieve performance levels Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. LEED for Homes does include renovation of pre existing contruction but renovation must be extensive. The US Green Building Counciil (USGBC) can be consulted for more info about Green Homes In Philadelphial. The Delaware Valley Green Building Council, http://dvgbc.org can also be consulted for all things related to Green and LEED living in Philadelphia.
