Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site

CITYSPACE | April 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

by Aaron Stella

Much of Philadelphia’s prominence is held in it’s politicking: as the birthplace of our nation’s independence (Constitution Center, Declaration of Independence, Ben Franklin, etc.). So at times, the city’s other points of interest are eclipsed, like the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, located in the western section of Northern Liberties. Many if not most are familiar with Poe as a famous dark fiction and magazine writer, but few knew of his residences in Philadelphia, which included homes on Arch Street, on Sixteenth Street near Locust, and on Coates Street near Twenty-Fifth Street. EAPNHS is devoted to providing teachers, students, tourists, and of course, Philadelphian locals with a detailed portrait of Poe’s life in Philadelphia, his intercity inspirations, love life, and literary career. Visit the web site www.nps.gov/edal to check out a full list of all the sights to see and activities to do while at the historic site. Just to list a few, you can investigate how Poe influenced writers around the world, fall in love again while viewing our “Poe’s Valentine’s” exhibit, explore the numerous surprises in Poe’s historic home and Listen to Poe’s works narrated by famous actors such as Vincent Price, Basil Rathbone, Christopher Walken and others. EAPHHS is open Wednesday – Sunday, 9am – 5pm. Be sure to check out their bicentennial calendar for special events happening at the site.
