Woodlands Cemetery

If you like history, architecture, art, trees, flowers, birds, bunnies, or just going for walks, The Woodlands Cemetery is an absolute must-explore. Located at 4000 Woodland Avenue in the University City neighborhood, The Woodlands is an idyllic, peaceful garden-cemetery. The historic headstones and mausoleums are embedded amongst an extensive collection of trees and bushes and other botanical samples. Some of this flora, like the ginkgo, was the first of its kind in the United States. A visit to the Woodlands is welcome any time of year as something new is seemingly always coming in bloom. Painters, photographers, and walkers will be your company on a trip to the Woodlands.

Firehouse Bicycles

Located upstairs in what was once a working firehouse, this bike-lovers haven is a testament to the politics of a large part of the neighborhood. A worker-owner business, Firehouse Bicycles and their staff of mechanics are a lifeline for the growing population of cyclists in University City and beyond. They can meticulously repair anything, from your proud vintage ride to your daughters first wheels. They also carry all kinds of parts, accessories, merchandise, and advise. Support democracy in action and go green: ride your bike over to Firehouse Bicycles at 50th & Baltimore.

Community Gardens

There are a handful of community gardens in University City which provide its residents a chance to refine and exhibit their horticultural skills. Gardeners young and old can meet, socialize, and share their craft with others. Most importantly it is a place where you can get outdoors, grow your own, eat fresh, and live healthy. Gardening can be a respite from a hectic life, particularly city-life, so check out the Neighborhood Gardens Association website, visit one of their locations, and find out how big your green thumb really is.
